Whether prediction markets are gambling depends on who you ask and where you live: legally, a US federal regulator treats them as event contracts (derivatives) while several US states and many countries treat contracts on sport and some events as gambling; economically, they differ from betting because you trade with other people at a public price and can sell before the end. On Nimb's view, both can be true at once: the same contract is a forecast to read and, for the person who buys it, a risk that can lose the whole stake.
How are prediction markets different from betting?

| Exit early | Sell at the market price | Cash-out, if offered |
| Price is public data | Yes, quoted as a forecast | Odds, with margin built in |
| Can lose your whole stake | Yes | Yes |

What does the law say?
- United States. The CFTC regulates event contracts on designated exchanges such as Kalshi and Polymarket US. Several states say contracts on sport are unlicensed gambling; in 2026 federal appeals courts reached different answers (the Third Circuit sided with Kalshi against New Jersey; the Sixth and Ninth Circuits let Ohio, Tennessee and Nevada enforce their gambling laws). Are prediction markets legal?
- United Kingdom. Betting is licensed by the Gambling Commission; Polymarket's international platform does not allow UK users to open positions.
- France and other countries. Many treat these markets as unlicensed gambling or unregistered financial products; Polymarket lists France and about 35 other countries as close-only.

When does it behave like gambling?
When the trade is for the thrill rather than a view you can explain, when the stakes are money you need, and when you chase losses. Short, fast markets (minute-by-minute crypto, single sports fixtures) look most like betting; Nimb leaves same-day sports fixtures out of its indexed pages and its movers for that reason. Prediction markets are zero-sum before fees: one side's gain is the other's loss.
If gambling is causing you harm, free help is available: BeGambleAware in the UK, the National Council on Problem Gambling (1-800-GAMBLER) in the US, and national services elsewhere.
Why does Nimb treat them as information?
Because the price is useful even if you never trade: a dated, money-backed estimate of what people expect. Nimb is built to read markets first; the order ticket is there for those who choose to act, with the break-even and all costs stated. Prediction markets as a news instrument · Risks.
